We Love Shed 1

Originally, the Event's Centre held almost all the indoor sport at Queen's Wharf
but it (and Wellington's) success in attracting more and more major events
which require substantial set-up and take down has meant that Shed 1 and,
when available, Shed 6, are now the only indoor team sports facilities in
walking distance of the CBD, Mt Victoria and other central areas.

Now, we can accept that Shed 1 isn't pretty:
But it is the source of lots of fun, fitness and socialising for work colleagues
and groups of friends, both men and women and it's a huge plus for Wellington
and its compact life-style. See the Gallery for further photos.

If we lose Shed 1, without having secured an appropriate replacement,
Wellington will be a much duller, sadder, less-connected place for many
people.

We might also see some of the bars and restaurants on Queen's Wharf
struggling as the evening indoor players stop frequenting them....

Survey Results
Our recent survey of users of Shed 1 has (to date) received 260 replies, 65%
of which were from lunch-time users and 35% from evening users.

A whopping 93% of users said that indoor sport at Queen's Wharf was a major
part of their weekly exercise.

82% of users said that losing indoor sport in the City Centre would be very
upsetting, 16% said they would be upset and just 2% would not be
concerned.

Just 31% of users said that they would use sports facilities if they were
moved to Waitangi Park or WestPac Stadium, the time taken to get to those
places compared to Queen's Wharf appears to be the major issue especially
for lunch-time users.

Finally, 99% of those that play for work teams said that sport improves the
work place.

Many thanks for taking part and providing such compelling and powerful
statistics to help us in our fight to save City Centre sport.

Survey Quotes

different departments."

these facilities so close to the centre. Losing them would be a huge loss to
the city."

Nick R - "My sport gives me a great opportunity to network with other areas
of my company and others."

Peter H - "I think it's great to have these facilities to use around lunch time.
Not only is it healthy but also great on the work performance."

Natasha N - "Public space not private space"

Briar T - "Would be extreme loss to Wellingtonians well being and health"

Gillian H - "A provision for indoor sport needs to be made!"

Donna B - "The Queen's Wharf location is so central and accessible. Moving it
from the CBD would be completely ridiculous"

Christoph M - "The indoor sport shed makes the waterfront so much livelier
and "democratic". Look at the boring "monoculture" around Auckland
waterfront harbour."

Chris B - "Great time away from office, good way to meet people"

Rachel H - "This facility is an extremely important part of recreation facilities
and what Wellington is all about. "Positively Wellington", without such facilities
we could not achieve that."

one of the positives about living in Wellington"

working population encourages the workforce to get active. This helps
decrease stress, enhances physical and mental well being and helps build a
more energetic, positive workforce!"

Mark S - "Don't privatise public space, the dock is the peoples!"

Gavin P - "Wellington is individual. Don't make it like everywhere else. Most
Hotels have less than 50% occupancy year round"

Richard W - "I would like to keep playing but a change in location would make
it less likely. Shed 1 is very convenient and a good facility".

Karyn M - "The current location is central and provides a relatively easy
option for people to get some form of physical activity"

Waireka M - "Shed 1 is a major contribution to not only our working lives but
also to our social lives. As a sports team we are taught how to play as one
and how to also compromise, this rolls over into our work lives, which shows.
There would be major disappointment if this was to go ahead. Not only does a
game of sport break up the monotony of a working day it also promotes good
health...."

waterfront is tasteless, inconsiderate, and destroys the waterfront."

Richard D - "Great venue - why get rid of it?"

Rowan J - "Don't you dare move it!"

Peter J - "Love the game and the venue"
